On October 7th 2023, Palestinian Hamas terrorists crossed into Israel and attacked Israeli kibbutzim families and young people attending an outdoor music concert. They murdered over 1200 men women and children and took hundreds captive. The terrorists videoed themselves laughing, rejoicing, praising Allah while, and directly after, knifing, shooting, hacking, raping, mutilating the innocent Israelis.
Those are the bald facts of that horrible day.
Afterwards, at least, Joe Biden, President of the United States visited Israel and vowed American support. On the downside: Everything, everything pretty much went to hell. Some feral rat crawled up into the brain of world leadership – including but not limited to fanatic parts of the Muslim world, world media, world diplomacy, world academia – elites in every sphere – and – the feral rat - shat and died. Then they – the aforementioned world movers – either threw in with Hamas terror or remained silent (Hollywood & world entertainment). Meantime Muslim supporters of Hamas along with thousands of college kids formed large mobs to protest the existence of Israel.
I always knew the heart-of-the-world was a poison, frozen donut but I didn’t think I’d live to have my nose pushed up in it with mocking demons all about me praising its wonderful taste and texture.
Mass murder is not the opening gambit to dialogue. What a great phrase to forget. But then, the world-wide pro-Hamas protesters, bunching and baying for Jewish blood, are not interested in dialogue. They want to scream; specifically, they want to scream themselves into a plastic-shelled impermeable, self-righteousness: Colonial, capitalist, oppressor, genocide, nazi, apartheid. Scream-words that become tickets out of the world of human decency and into a world of limitless fetor. Hatred, turns out, is a blast. They want to be inhuman, they want to un-humanize themselves.
The passion behind the screams of the protesters: where does it come from? We have some experience with Muslim hatred of the west. What about the college age kids? From whence: a kind of bursting, a frission of poison air and tears, a hate-rush of some magnitude, way way beyond discourse. You just might believe these children (college kids are children) raised by liberal suburban teacher ladies who have told them over and over and over that arms are for hugging, that there are no illegal people, that everyone is equal, that the wretched of the earth must be brought high while the privileged (you) must be brought low. Force-fed liberal pieties from kindergarten onward, identity-equity pounded into them with no latitude for human foible, no laughter, no release. But then. They hit college. They are bloated, venom-poofing-children with a surfeit of identitarian cliché: Colonial, capitalist, oppressor, genocide, nazi, apartheid. Words, empty of content, empty of history, words misused as synonyms for the word “bad” - burst forth. And now they become words with an entire people and nation attached to them: Jews.
Note to college kids who have embraced anti-Semitism and thrown in with Hamas: you are not just ill-educated, you are – much worse – heartless.
What the hell? We - America - acknowledged our sins and crawled over a social beachhead of barnacles to give black Americans, women and other minorities their due in American life. Now I’ve got to sit still while the pro-Palestinian contingent blocks streets and freeways, defaces buildings and monuments, chants for the death of Jews from the river to the sea, weaponly waves the Palestinian flag, tears down posters of kidnapped Israeli citizens, threatens Jewish students, families and businesses, and even murders Jewish counter protesters? Hatred, turns out, is a blast. We all know that hate blinds but it has come to us afresh that hate also energizes – especially the young, the stupid, the brainwashed. These very public, full-throated, anti-Semite, pro-Hamas screamers perform with confidence that their every act will be met with hospitality by civic and academic authorities. Where are our leaders?
I don’t want to share the country with those who cry out in public for the mass extermination of Israelis and Jews worldwide. Fellow human beings.
Civic leaders? Heads of universities? Lawyers? Teachers? Law enforcement? The FBI? The FBI has the most sophisticated photo-ID software that helps them track down January 6 digbats to every hamlet in America. Why not shut down mass demonstrations supporting Hamas, a known terrorist organization dedicated to mass murder of Jews? Throw them in jail; they are not indulging in free speech; they are endorsing mass murder of innocents. They need to be shut down and told that we don’t do this in America.
When you murder the innocent, you murder existence itself. I hope that is self-evident. Hamas and their supporters think that by investing in death they can find life. Nihilism at its finest.
Jewish persecution does not emanate from anything Jewish; anti-Semitism emanates from the poisoned soul of the anti-Semite. I hope that is self-evident.
The world-wide, pro-Hamas protesters are trying to make the case that the savage attack on Israel on October 7 was Israel’s fault. No, it wasn’t. There is something in Jewish life and faith that seems to ask an accounting from the world. Not in the form of demand, but, rather, in the form of a hint or prayer that asks: Do you believe in life? That Frozen Heart-of-the-World – not wanting to give accounting of anything in its guilty life – turns the question into an accusation, into a presence, an evil excuse, a dire impulse. They turn a blessing into a curse. Anything positive you write about Jews, anti-Semites will turn it into their favorite trope: Jewish persecution is the fault of the Jews …
Once again, no it’s not; it is the fault of evil men and women who would deny life to a striving accomplished life-affirming, overcoming, very human and - yes – very human people.
Long live Israel and the Jewish People.
Dex, finally getting to read your work. My favorite line in this: "I always knew the heart-of-the-world was a poison, frozen donut but I didn’t think I’d live to have my nose pushed up in it with mocking demons all about me praising its wonderful taste and texture." OOF. Rock on.
